Year seven of the Waiakea Robotics club started with a Kalua Pork Fundraiser. This large fundraiser not only provided funds for the club, but also a good team bonding experience not only between club members, but the parents, faculty, alumi, and members of the community as well. Not long after the fundraiser, the robotics club sent a few members back to Japan for the Microbot competiton. Placing __...the team headed home with high spirits. Underwater robotics followed shortly thereafter. Teaming up with the Pacific Aquaculture Facility in Hilo, stuents were given a challenge to pick up dead fish from the bottom of their pond. After a short turnaround Waiakea robotics entered in the inagural Hilo VEX tournament. The five teams participating placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. The top three teams were qualified for the Pan Pacific competition on Oahu. There Waiakea placed 2nd. The teams were then moved on to the Worlds competition in Dallas, Texas. The teams were placed in three seperate divisions. One team made it to the semi-finals. The same weekend as the Worlds in Dallas, another part of the robotics team went to Oahu for the regional Botball compatition. The Botball team placed 3rd in seeding, 3rd overall, 4th in the tournament, and won a judges award for an innovative design. 2007-2008 Officers: President: Jordan Olive Vice President: Samuel Heinzen Secretary: Jesse Shiroma Treasurer: Leanne King Historians: Caralyn King & Kyra Blue Team Members: Agyei Marshall, Kelson Lau, Kazane Namikawa, Reid Nakamura, Garry Murayama, Jonathan Torigoe, Nolan Kamitaki, Chelsea Sato, Melanie Aki, Cassie Kuwahara, Noah Bath The 2007-2008 school year brought around the sixth year of the robotics club. Ke Koa O Haaheo had a very long year ahead of them. Starting in November the team represented the United States in the annual Microbot competition. Placing 1st in the autonomous 1 inch robot category, 3rd in the 30 centimeter run, 1 cubic centimeter robot category, and winning a judges award in the cubic inch RC category. After returning home, students took some time for a relaxing winter break until the F.I.R.S.T. season started again. Entering with Stitch IV in the Silicon Valley Regional for the second year. Placed 2nd in the tournament and won the Engineering Inspiration Award which qualified them for nationals once again. Upon returning home from Silicon Valley, the team turned around and headed to the inagural F.I.R.S.T. Hawaii regional. Finishing 3rd in the tournament, and winning the Chrystler Team Spirit Award, the team ____(can someone finish this sentence please?). Waiakea's Warriors returned to the Nationals in Atlanta Georgia. Placing __ out of ___ teams the team happily returned home. With another two week turnaround, the team headed back to the regional Botball competition. Placing 7th overall the team ended the year with their 3rd HIRA camp. 2006-2007 Officers: President: Jordan Olive Vice President: Secretary: Jesse Shiroma Treasurer: Historians: Samuel Heinzen & Samuel Miller Team members: Amber Imai, Amber Arakaki, Elena Brown, Matthew Brown, Tyron Hamamoto, Collin Takasaki, Cori Goya, Cassie Kuwahara, Kyra Blue, Caralyn King, Leanne King, Jonathan Torigoe, Nolan Kamitaki, Kelson Lau, Leland Lopez, Agyei Marshall In their 5th year, the robotics team was named "Kekoa O Haa'heo" - Most Excellent Warriors. At the beginning of the year, the team formed the BIg Island Underwater Robotics Competition. A small underwater robotics competiton at the Hilo High School pool. Waiakea teams placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. After the new year the team entered the F.I.R.S.T. competition under a new number 2024. Their 120 pound, massive inner-tube carrying and sorting robot, Stitch III, was entered into the Regional competition at Silicon Valley, CA and took home the Rookie Allstar Award. This qualified them for the national championship competition, sponsored by NASA, in Atlanta, Georgia. After Nationals the team had a two week turnaround before the regional Botball competition on Oahu. There the team placed 1st in seeding, 3rd overall, __ in the tournament. Kekoa O Haaheo then moved on to the Botball Worlds competition on Oahu in July. During the summer of 2007, Waiakea robotics held their 2nd Hawaii Island Robotics Academy (HIRA). 2005-2006 Officers: President: Kiyo Olive Vice President:Tyron Hamamoto Secretary: Elena Brown Treasurer: Amber Imai Historian: Samuel Miller This is the fourth year the Robotics Club had been at Waiakea High School. The Waiakea High School Robotics Club is well known for its success in competition and for its Kalua Pig fundraisers. It has competed in FIRST, HURC/MATE, and Botball. Most of the club members who have graduated are now attending college and are majoring in engineering. Anyone who is interested in technology is welcome to join, especially if you are looking into the engineering field. This year during first semester the WHS Robotics Club participated in the HURC/MATE competition. They entered three teams that flew over to compete at UH-Manoa on Oahu. The teams won first, third, and fifth in the state. This was the first time that a WHS team won the state championship. Second semester, the club entered the Botball competition. The task was a search and resuce operation in which they needed to get Botguy, Tribbles and Supply balls onto their side. The WHS Teams won: Double Elimination Finalists:Waiakea High School Team 06-0135 Waiakea High School Team 06-0136 Overall Tournament Winners:1st Place: Waiakea High School Team 06-0136 4th Place: Waiakea High School Team 06-0135 Seeding Rounds:1st Seeding Round- Waiakea High School Team 06-1036 (19 pt.) The task of this competition was to build an ROV (Robotic Operated Vehicle) that could operate under water. Six tasks had to be accomplished in twenty-five minutes. Waiakea High had entered two teams, an all-girls team and an all-boys team. The girls team placed second in the state and the boys team tied for third in the state. Since this competition only took up the first semester, the club also participated in the Botball competition, which was held at Oahu's Conventional Center. In this competition, it was required to make a Lego Robot which was to be programmed to do tasks. The girls team placed first in the seeding round and second overall. The boys team took third in seeding and fifth overall. That year we had 7 seniors, 7 juniors, 9 sophmores, and 6 freshmen. 2003-2004 In the club's second year, the team entered again into the FIRST Robotics Competition. The task was to move jumbo balls into goals using the Robot. That year there were 6 seniors, 5 juniors, 10 sophmores, and 6 freshmen. The team placed 27/40 in the Portland, OR competition. 2002-2003 The Robotics Club was started off by the idea of participating in the F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. The task was to build a 135-pound Robot that could push/pick up boxes. The club at that time consisted of 8 seniors, 2 juniors, and 5 freshmen. They formed Team 1056, in which they placed 14/40 in the Seattle, WA competition.
